Minnesota Environmental Fund: More than Workplace Giving

November 21st, 2017

As we get into the holiday season, there’s a lot of talk about giving back. While Minnesota Environmental Fund (MEF) is a workplace giving organization that benefits 19 member organizations across Minnesota, it’s also a way for people to volunteer and get involved directly with conserving our environment. It’s more than workplace giving— it’s a way to give back.

What does volunteering with MEF look like?

1. This September, MEF coordinated a volunteer event for Carlson employees. They went to Burwell Park in Minnetonka for an afternoon of pulling invasive species around the Park.

2. MEF also offers opportunities for in-office volunteering or “speed volunteering.” We recently hosted a speed volunteering event at the HGA office in Minneapolis. Over the course of an hour, employees were able to join us in their break room to help assemble native seed packets and MEF note cards, both items that MEF uses as thank yous.

3. I recently led a volunteer event for alumni of the University of Minnesota. During the event, volunteers pulled invasive species along the Mississippi riverfront in Minneapolis.

4. Over the summer, MEF hosted a volunteer event with Mississippi Park Connection and Mississippi National River and Recreation Area. Volunteers spent the afternoon on the Mississippi riverfront at Mill Ruins Park pulling invasive species and planting native species. Volunteers joined a Park Ranger in the Amber Box at the Guthrie Theater to hear about the history of that industrial part of Minneapolis. MEF offered this event for those who live in and work in downtown Minneapolis, so that they could come together as a community to improve the environment. Some of the workplaces represented included: Wells Fargo, Jamf Software and the University of Minnesota.

5. Washington County hosted MEF at their Health, Safety and Wellness Fair. Washington County employees stopped by the MEF booth to participate in speed racing and help assemble native seed packets.

Supporting Great Stories with Minnesota Environmental Fund

October 12th, 2017

As a communications professional, I’m a sucker for a good story. Lucky for me, I work at an organization that is constantly telling great stories— from our work to clean up Minnesota’s older diesel engines to forming farmer-company partnerships to so many other things.

But I also know that other environmental nonprofits in Minnesota have amazing stories too! Environmental Initiative is one of 19 members of the Minnesota Environmental Fund (MEF), which helps people volunteer and give at work to protect, conserve, and restore Minnesota’s environment. At our last membership meeting, I got to hear about how MEF positively impacts the 19 member organizations it supports and how each organization is helping Minnesota’s environment through its own unique projects. Here are some of my takeaways:

Protecting a Mississippi River Park
In early August, the River Heights Park in Inver Grove Heights was in danger of being sold and redeveloped, but Friends of the Mississippi River, along with its neighbors and partners, stepped up to defend the land. The park, which is part of the Mississippi National River & Recreation Area as well as the Mississippi River Flyway, has been preserved thanks to their hard work.

Nurturing Future Leaders
In the St. Cloud area, Wilderness Inquiry took dozens of sixth graders to Lake Sagatagan, where they went canoeing and learned about Minnesota history from a “floating classroom.” Wilderness Inquiry staff shared stories about the voyageurs and children learned about fur traders, and became more comfortable on the water and in the wilderness.  Paddling in a huge canoe is a great way to practice teamwork and leadership!

Restoring nature for clean water and wildlife
Along the Mississippi River, Audubon Minnesota is restoring floodplain forests to improve water quality and habitat for wildlife, both for nesting and migrating.  Now, bald eagles are thriving, and Audubon and its partners are shaping solutions to sustain healthy wildlife– and people– for generations to come.

Support great stories with Minnesota Environmental Fund

Each of MEF’s members has amazing stories from its work to preserve our land, water, air, and wildlife.

Through MEF and with workplace giving, it’s easy to support all of these great stories, including what’s happening at Environmental Initiative!

Does your employer offer giving and volunteering at work? MEF is currently offered to employees in over 100 Minnesota workplaces – including Environmental Initiative! MEF connects more than 200,000 employees with their communities. Employees love to help out, and MEF makes that possible– supporting so many great stories of caring for our environment!

Four ways to support a quarter-century’s worth of work

June 19th, 2017

All I can say is “wow.” The amount of energy and support we’ve received in response to our 25th Anniversary has been humbling. Seeing the last quarter-century of our work to build community to solve environmental problems, many folks have been asking about ways they can contribute to our future successes.

And it’s a great question! We’re in the middle of our mid-year giving campaign with the goal of raising $25,000 by the end of June. We try to offer a variety of giving options so you can contribute in a way that makes sense for you.

MEMBERSHIP

Becoming an individual or organizational member is the most effective way to contribute—your dollars go a little longer and you get special benefits. You can choose the amount you give over the course of a year, and depending on the amount, we gift you anything from a feature on our blog to free tickets to our events.

ONE TIME DONATION

If you’re already a member, fantastic! Our giving campaign is until the end of June, and we’re trying to raise a little extra. Consider a membership renewal if you’ve lapsed or a one-time donation to support the next 25 years of our work. Your gift supports event programs, consensus-based solutions, and projects that protect our air, land and water. Give today »

Minnesota Environmental Fund Announces Cordelia Pierson as New Executive Director

July 10th, 2014

As many of you know, Environmental Initiative is one of more than twenty local environmental nonprofit organizations that belong to the Minnesota Environmental Fund. We’ve been a member since 2004 and have directly benefited from Minnesota Environmental Fund’s efforts to provide education and a vital payroll giving choice to employees who wish to support environmental causes through workplace giving campaigns. It’s amazing what a few dollars per paycheck can do to help Environmental Initiative realize our mission.

I’m proud to announce  Cordelia Pierson has recently been named Minnesota Environmental Fund’s new executive director. She succeedsExecutive Director, Cordelia Pierson Ed Marek who led the organization for more than a decade. I had the opportunity to be directly involved in the hiring process for this extremely important position. I worked with a handful of other leaders from Minnesota Environmental Fund’s member organizations to support the search over the past several months. This experience was a strong reminder for me about the importance of Environmental Initiative’s involvement in the Minnesota Environmental Fund and with our fellow environmental organizations more broadly.

Cordelia brings more than twenty years of nonprofit and financial management experience to the organization as a former nonprofit executive director, board president, and program director. Most recently, Cordelia served as the executive director for the newly established, Minneapolis Riverfront Partnership, where she led fundraising, organizational development, and riverfront land protection and revitalization efforts. I’m so impressed with Cordelia’s passion and dedication to Minnesota, to our special places, and our natural resources. She understands and greatly appreciates the importance of place and the need to build relationships with companies, organizations, and employees who are willing to invest financially to make our communities healthy and beautiful places to live.

I hope you will join me in welcoming Cordelia to the Minnesota Environmental Fund!
