Andersen Corporation: Member of the Month

Andersen Corporation, a longtime supporter and partner of Environmental Initiative, is our Member of the Month for November. This year, at the 25th Anniversary Environmental Initiative Awards, Andersen’s Eliza Clark was honored as an Emerging Leader— the very first recipient of the award. Clark is the Director of Sustainability and Environmental at Andersen Corporation, a founding member of the Minnesota Sustainable Growth Coalition, and the Vice Chair of Super Bowl LII’s Sustainability Committee. She’s a standout in corporate sustainability, and known for unifying others. You can learn more below about Andersen Corporation’s environmental leadership below.

 

1. What drew you to be a board member of Environmental Initiative?

Andersen Corporation has been one of Environmental Initiative’s longest and most enthusiastic supporters. We believe in the power of unconventional partnerships to solve tough problems, which is at the core of Environmental Initiative’s mission. I am proud and humbled to have the opportunity to serve on the board of an organization that is both convening and leading some of the most innovative and effective environmental programs in our region.

2. What makes Environmental Initiative such a hub for successful environmental collaborations?

I believe Environmental Initiative’s success is largely due to its outstanding staff who have consistently demonstrated not only technical acumen, but also authenticity, empathy, and inclusiveness over the organization’s 25-year history. Leaders across our region have come to trust Environmental Initiative to help bridge challenging barriers to build understanding, focus, and momentum.

3. How does Environmental Initiative support your goals and mission as Director of Sustainability at Andersen Corporation?

We have bold goals at Andersen to advance environmental responsibility outside our four walls. Environmental Initiative provides a key platform to work with other companies, NGOs, and public sector partners to assess and tackle systemic problems and opportunities.

4. Andersen Corporation has sponsored Environmental Initiative’s Business and the Environment Series for over a decade. Why?

The Business and the Environment Series (fondly known as “BES” to its regulars) has consistently delivered quality educational content and best practice sharing among environmental practitioners across Minnesota. We are grateful that we had the opportunity to foster, support and grow this network of collaborators who share the belief that our society benefits when we share knowledge and resources.

5. You were the 2017 recipient of Environmental Initiative’s Emerging Leader award. What did receiving the award mean to you?

This year’s Environmental Initiative Awards had a special dynamism tied to the organization’s 25th anniversary. It was amazing to feel the energy and shared resolve in the room that evening. As I stated in my remarks, I feel incredibly lucky to be working in the field of sustainability within the best environmental community anywhere– much of which is tied to Environmental Initiative’s leadership and history.

6. As we look to the future, what role do you see Environmental Initiative playing in advancing sustainability in our region?

With programs like the Minnesota Sustainable Growth Coalition, Environmental Initiative is on the cusp of an exciting new chapter in its history– one the is propelled by its extensive network and credibility as an effective convener. I am very excited for the work ahead of the organization and look forward to celebrating many measurable wins and partnerships over the next 25 years!

Meet Waste Management, our Member of the Month

Waste Management (WM) has a long tradition of investment in the communities that we serve. Our presence in the community is visible and starts with our drivers and the connection that they make with our customers every day and continues with the significant contributions that our company makes to a variety of causes.

Although WM is an environmental services company, our contributions and community relations efforts go well beyond the environmental scope of our business. Our involvement in the community is big and small, ranging from having a WM truck visit a cancer-stricken child on his birthday to contributing millions of dollars to the Red Cross to assist with Hurricane Harvey. Giving back is firmly entrenched in the WM culture and it is our belief that partnering with the communities that we serve will create a brighter future for all.

A Partner for Cleaner Air & Collective Learning

At home in Minnesota, WM began working more closely with the Environmental Initiative in 2002 and through the Clean Air Minnesota program, we pioneered the use of DPF filters on our trucks to reduce truck emissions. This was a step in the right direction for air quality in the metro area that ultimately led our company to invest in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks— a nationwide effort to switch from diesel to CNG that began in 2008 and continues today. CNG fueling station installation and investment in a CNG fleet have reduced greenhouse gas emissions significantly for our company and for the communities that we serve.

As a past Environmental Initiative Board member, I enjoyed various roles: from advising the organization on their Business and Environment Series to reviewing their various programs to giving direction on stakeholder group convenings. These events that engage multiple parties in discussions related to the environment are like “old home week,” because they provide a great opportunity to network with people that I have connected with over the years, but also to meet newcomers to the environmental field.

One of my fondest memories with Environmental Initiative was a matching contribution that Waste Management made to the Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity for the first green building home in the Twin Cities. WM used the building of this home in Crystal as an opportunity for a team building exercise for our Area’s leadership team. WM gained employee engagement through our hands-on work by helping other volunteers build this home, and the reward of giving back to a family in need was impactful. It was fun and a learning experience at the same time! WM also got to attend the open house for the future owners which was very gratifying.I have been with WM for over 15 years, and never have our volunteer efforts and community partnerships been a more important part of our culture.  We will continue to support Environmental Initiative because we believe it is an organization that has served a crucial role in efforts to improve the communities in which we all live and work.

Meet Great River Energy, Member of the Month

Great River Energy (GRE) has a long history with Environmental Initiative (remember when it was Minnesota Environmental Initiative?). One of our early connections was with Energy Alley, which provided a clearinghouse of environmental information for businesses and individuals.

Energy Alley was the first collaborative effort in Minnesota to advance renewable energy and efficiency in what is now known as the clean energy sector.

Over the years, GRE has continued to support Environmental Initiative’s work, and we congratulate this fine non-profit organization on 25 very successful years of bringing together stakeholders– businesses, NGOs, government, citizens– to work toward viable solutions to Minnesota’s environmental problems.

ORGANIZATIONAL PARTNER TO MULTIPLE PROJECTS

For many years GRE has been a premier sponsor of Environmental Initiative’s annual Environmental Initiative Awards event. This event brings together over 400 environmental leaders to celebrate and honor innovative projects that have achieved extraordinary environmental results through the power of partnership. GRE has also been a long-time sponsor of Environmental Initiative’s Legislative Preview, a Policy Forum event hosted each year. We are a member of the Minnesota Sustainable Growth Coalition which, led by members of the business community, has worked on initiatives including growth in renewable energy for electric end uses such as electric vehicles. Through this work and outside of it, GRE views Environmental Initiative as a stakeholder in the environmental community and seeks their input.

PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT AND DEDICATION

Personally, I’ve been involved with Environmental Initiative for more than 10 years and was honored to serve on the organization’s board for nine of those years. During that time, I was able to experience a closer view of the “inner workings” of Environmental Initiative. An organization’s most important asset is its employees, and Environmental Initiative is no exception. I have always been impressed with the quality and dedication of staff. Each brings a unique skill set and vibrant enthusiasm to their job. Professionally leading the organization and thoughtfully carrying out its mission is Executive Director Mike Harley, who is celebrating his 20-year anniversary with the organization next month. Through Mike’s leadership, relationships, commitment and energy, Environmental Initiative continues to evolve and remains a highly respected organization in our community.

So, happy 25th birthday, Environmental Initiative– and here’s to 25 more fantastic years of making positive change happen for the betterment of our environment and our citizens.

Meet Flint Hills Resources

Congratulations to Environmental Initiative on celebrating 25 years of bringing partners together to help solve environmental problems. We are excited to be one of those partners for more than a dozen years! As a founding sponsor of Project Green Fleet, a collaborative effort with Environmental Initiative to install pollution control equipment in thousands of Minnesota school buses, heavy-duty trucks and other diesel vehicles, we couldn’t be more proud of the positive impact this program has made in our communities.

This award-winning, voluntary program has taken off and has some pretty impressive accomplishments, including:

  • Installing pollution control equipment on 3,200 school buses
  • Retrofitting, repowering or upgrading more than 1,300 heavy-duty diesel engines, including trucks, transit buses, trains, and construction equipment
  • Reducing emissions the equivalent of removing 750,000 cars from the road annually

 

 

Not only is Flint Hills Resources proud to partner on Project Green Fleet, but we are also a member of Clean Air Minnesota, a group of businesses, units of government and environmental organizations convened by Environmental Initiative to develop a set of strategies to clean up the air through proactive, voluntary approaches.

As a refinery that has reduced total onsite emissions in 11 of the last 15 years, and whose emissions per barrel are approximately 19% lower than other U.S. refineries, we are continuously working to improve our environmental performance.

Member of the Month: CenterPoint Energy

CenterPoint Energy is honored to be the July featured member of the month. We value our membership with Environmental Initiative and the important message it promotes about collaborating to improve the environment. CenterPoint Energy is passionate about contributing to a cleaner environment. We work to increase energy efficiency to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy costs for our customers through our Conservation Improvement Program offerings. Our company has operated in Minnesota for more than 150 years, providing safe, reliable natural gas and related services. CenterPoint Energy currently serves over 840,000 customers in more than 300 communities.

CenterPoint Energy has been offering conservation programs for nearly 30 years. We work with residential, commercial, and industrial customers to help them upgrade equipment, improve building envelopes, pursue efficient building designs and change customer behavior to reduce natural gas usage.

CenterPoint Energy’s conservation program energy savings surpassed the company’s savings goal last year by nearly 30 percent. In 2016, 2,006,014 dekatherms (dth) of natural gas was saved, the equivalent of removing about 23,185 passenger vehicles from the road for one year. The company’s energy conservation efforts have been highly successful and continue to exceed our energy conservation goals. These efforts not only improve the environment, but also provide a valuable service to our customers, allowing them to reduce their energy bills.

The success of our conservation program is due largely to a number of strategic partnerships with other utilities, cities, business associations, and non-profit organizations. “More people working collaboratively towards a similar goal is a great way to maximize potential.” said CenterPoint Energy director of energy efficiency, Todd Berreman.

One example of collaboration that helps make our conservation program successful is the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP), a one-of-a-kind collaboration between CenterPoint Energy, the City of Minneapolis and Xcel Energy. This partnership between the City and its electric and natural gas utility providers was established to help Minneapolis reach its goals for greenhouse gas emissions reductions and increase participation and energy savings through utility conservation programs in the City. In 2016, the CEP was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the unique and cutting edge collaborative approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

As a former Board Chair of Environmental Initiative, I am pleased to support Environmental Initiative and its mission, and am thrilled to see the organization thriving after 25 years. Waste Management: Embracing the Circular Economy

The concept of recycling discarded materials back into the manufacturing process is a no-brainer.  Instead of mining new resources, this “Circular Economy” mindset urges us to use and reuse materials time and again, recycling them and reusing them, in a closed loop of innovations. Avoiding the mining and extraction of new materials reduces demands on natural resources and reduces the carbon and other emissions that result from the manufacturing process. The concept works particularly well for metals, which are almost indefinitely reusable. For products like paper and metal, resource reuse is also generally cheaper than use of virgin materials.bale of crushed cans

But there’s more to the circular economy. The value lies not just in completing the circle, but in what you gain along the way. A functioning circular economy helps to continually reduce emissions and other environmental impacts. Waste, including residual waste, is reduced as is the use of non-renewable energies in traditional manufacture.

It’s important to remember that the concept of a circular economy remains, after all, an “economy”.  There are market forces to be reckoned with, including unpredictable externalities and shifting public demand. And, when we consider all of our daily activities, by far the most important is to avoid producing waste in the first place. Through waste reduction, we produce fewer waste related impacts to manage and we save money.  Our Waste Management Sustainability Services, Public Sector Services and Manufacturing and Industrial teams focus on how we can all better protect the environment by working with customers to reduce the waste they generate. For these customers, we become the “Zero-Waste Management” company.

Waste Management of Minnesota

Waste Management is Minnesota’s largest recycling and waste services provider in Minnesota, recycling nearly 250,000 tons of material per year at the Twin Cities Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Minneapolis. The Twin Cities MRF is the top Waste Management performing recycling facility of over 100 Waste Management facilities.

Waste Management also provides premium waste collection services and disposal facilities that meet all state and federal requirements for environmental protection.

With the largest network of recycling facilities, transfer stations and landfills in the nation, Waste Management’s entire business can adapt to meet the needs of every distinct customer group.

Meet Great River Energy: Member of the Month

Great River Energy is a not-for-profit cooperative which provides wholesale electric service to 28 distribution cooperatives located in Minnesota. Those member cooperatives distribute electricity to approximately 665,000 families, farms and businesses. With $4 billion in assets, Great River Energy is the second largest electric power supplier in Minnesota, and one of the largest generation and transmission cooperatives in the United States.

Great River Energy takes great pride in conducting our business with a high concern for the environment.

We are committed to conserving resources through environmental stewardship, pollution prevention, waste minimization, recycling and reuse. This dedication is demonstrated by the inclusion of environmental sustainability in our mission.

As a cooperative, Great River Energy holds commitment to community in high regard. One of the ways we do that is through re-establishing native habitat.

We are excited to be announcing a new project!HQ prairie solar.jpg

Together with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and the city of Elk River, Great River Energy will be converting nine acres into pollinator prairie habitat at its Elk River campus off U.S. Highway 10. With more than 27,000 cars driving by daily, this well-traveled area is perfect for educating the traveling public about the importance of pollinator friendly, prairie plantings.

Past native prairie projects

Great River Energy, for the last decade, has invested in over 200 acres of re-established native prairie.  Some of Great River Energy’s native prairie projects include:

  • Establishing native prairie along transmission lines outside of Savage, Minn., and in the city of Ramsey, Minn., both with park systems.
  • Planting pollinator friendly habitat along Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center’s solar array and in their interpretive center in fall 2015.
  • Incorporating pollinator prairie as part of the landscape architecture at Great River Energy’s headquarters building in Maple Grove, Minn.
  • Restoring more than 120 acres of prairie near Lakefield Junction Station, Pleasant Valley Peaking Station, Cambridge Peaking Plant, and near Great River Energy’s New Prague office.
