Member of the Month: CenterPoint Energy

July 6th, 2017

CenterPoint Energy is honored to be the July featured member of the month. We value our membership with Environmental Initiative and the important message it promotes about collaborating to improve the environment. CenterPoint Energy is passionate about contributing to a cleaner environment. We work to increase energy efficiency to reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions and lower energy costs for our customers through our Conservation Improvement Program offerings. Our company has operated in Minnesota for more than 150 years, providing safe, reliable natural gas and related services. CenterPoint Energy currently serves over 840,000 customers in more than 300 communities.

CenterPoint Energy has been offering conservation programs for nearly 30 years. We work with residential, commercial, and industrial customers to help them upgrade equipment, improve building envelopes, pursue efficient building designs and change customer behavior to reduce natural gas usage.

CenterPoint Energy’s conservation program energy savings surpassed the company’s savings goal last year by nearly 30 percent. In 2016, 2,006,014 dekatherms (dth) of natural gas was saved, the equivalent of removing about 23,185 passenger vehicles from the road for one year. The company’s energy conservation efforts have been highly successful and continue to exceed our energy conservation goals. These efforts not only improve the environment, but also provide a valuable service to our customers, allowing them to reduce their energy bills.

The success of our conservation program is due largely to a number of strategic partnerships with other utilities, cities, business associations, and non-profit organizations. “More people working collaboratively towards a similar goal is a great way to maximize potential.” said CenterPoint Energy director of energy efficiency, Todd Berreman.

One example of collaboration that helps make our conservation program successful is the Clean Energy Partnership (CEP), a one-of-a-kind collaboration between CenterPoint Energy, the City of Minneapolis and Xcel Energy. This partnership between the City and its electric and natural gas utility providers was established to help Minneapolis reach its goals for greenhouse gas emissions reductions and increase participation and energy savings through utility conservation programs in the City. In 2016, the CEP was recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the unique and cutting edge collaborative approach to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

CenterPoint Energy looks forward to many more years of membership with Environmental Initiative as we collaborate to achieve a cleaner environment.

Member of the Month: CenterPoint Energy

May 2nd, 2016

CenterPoint Energy is Minnesota’s largest natural gas utility, serving over 800,000 customers. We have supported Environmental Initiative since 1999 and appreciate the opportunity to be highlighted as Member of the Month. We are committed to identifying and implementing ways to help mitigate the environmental impact of our company’s operations and our customers’ energy needs.

Energy Efficiency

Known as the Conservation Improvement Program (CIP), CenterPoint Energy’s award-winning natural gas energy efficiency programs are among the best and highest-achieving in the country. From simple energy-saving tips to engineering assistance and financial incentives, our efficiency offerings can help nearly any of our customers find ways to reduce usage and save money.Trumbo 2015 live streaming film online

Here are a few highlights of CenterPoint Energy’s 2015 CIP achievements:

  • More than 260,000 customers participated in our programs, receiving energy audits, technical assistance, and other benefits – including more than $10.5 million in rebates for high efficiency equipment installation.
  • Together with our customers, we saved approximately 1.85 billion cubic feet of natural gas – that’s enough to supply nearly 20,300 homes with natural gas for a year, representing annual cost savings of about $11.1 million.
  • That energy savings represents about 99,000 metric tons of avoided carbon dioxide emissions per year – comparable to taking 16,300 cars off the road.

Green Energy Leader…

Clean Energy Partnership wins EPA award
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently presented the Minneapolis Clean Energy Partnership with a 2016 Climate Leadership Climate Leadership Awards 2016Award in the Innovative Partnerships category. The Innovative Partnerships certificate recognizes organizations working collaboratively on leading-edge climate initiatives. CenterPoint Energy is a partner in the Clean Energy Partnership along with the city of Minneapolis and Xcel Energy. The partnership aims to help Minneapolis achieve the clean energy goals set forth in the city’s 2013 Climate Action Plan and Energy Vision for 2040.

CenterPoint Energy named Founding Partner and takes EPA Methane Challenge Program
The EPA officially launched the Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program with 41 Founding Partners at the Global Methane Forum on March 30, 2016 in Washington, D.C. Founding partners made a commitment to implement a suite of best management practices across their operations within five years, as outlined in the “Methane Challenge Program Best Management Practice (BMP) Commitment Framework” (PDF). CenterPoint Energy is one of the founding partners who took on the Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program.

Fueling the Future – Natural Gas Vehicles (NGVs)
CenterPoint Energy is taking a leadership role building gas infrastructure to serve compressed natural gas fueling stations, converting its own fleet to natural gas, and providing tools to encourage natural gas fleet conversion. We believe our role is to educate, promote and facilitate the economic and environmental advantages of natural gas vehicles, and strive to become a leading energy company for this technology. More businesses and consumers are turning to NGVs as the solution to their needs for clean, cost-effective transportation.

CenterPoint Energy is the largest natural gas utility in Minnesota with over 800,000 customers. We are continually looking for ways to reduce the impact on the environment by helping customers learn how      tGreenBoy_SS13774432.jpghey can save energy with high-efficiency natural gas appliances and by using natural gas wisely. We offer our Minnesota residential, commercial and industrial customers several Conservation Improvement Programs (CIP) to encourage investing in energy-efficient appliances and other measures to save energy and money both today and tomorrow. Rebates are available for high-efficiency heating systems, water heaters, fireplaces, foodservice, commercial and industrial custom equipment and more. Through rebates, as well as other energy-saving programs such as providing natural gas audits and free energy-saving showerheads, we help our customers make a real impact on their energy use, in turn, helping our environment.

Energy Savings with Impact

In 2014, Minnesota customers who took advantage of our CIP programs saved approximately 1.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas. That is enough to supply nearly 19,000 homes with natural gas for one year – an energy cost savings of about $13.4 million. These programs also helped the environment by reducing our customers’ total carbon footprint by just under 90,000 metric tons, or enough to remove 14,942 cars from the roadway for one year.  E Source recently recognized CenterPoint Energy’s – Minnesota energy efficiency program for achieving the greatest energy savings in the nation as a percentage of its natural gas sales (1.16 percent)!

Fueling the Future

As more and more consumers and businesses are turning to natural gas vehicles (NGVs), CenterPoint Energy is also helping to educate and promote their use as the responsible move towards a cleaner-burning alternative to gasoline and diesel. Businesses such as Waste Management and United Postal Service are converting their fleets to NGVs and they, like so many other businesses, are finding solid reasons to do so:

  • NGVs are 30 percent cleaner than those that run on traditional gasoline or diesel. Carbon monoxide emissions are reduced by 70 to 90 percent and carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by 20 to 30 percent. Plus, even noise pollution is reduced, as NGVs operate at an 80 to 90 percent lower decibel level than diesel fueled vehicles.
  • There are more than 1,525 fueling stations in the U.S. – half of which are open to the public, including several new stations in Minnesota
  • NGVs meet the same safety standards as gasoline models with similar fuel economy and performance.
