It’s hard to believe in the middle of February, but we’re already gearing up for one of our favorite times of year – the Environmental Initiative Awards! Nominations are now being accepted in five categories, finalists will be announced in April, and winners will be announced at the awards dinner on May 24. Don’t miss your chance to recognize a project that has achieved positive environmental outcomes through partnership!

One of my favorite award projects winners from 2011 was Powderhorn Lake Neighborhood of Raingardens, winner of the Environmental Initiative Award for Environmental Education. Project partners worked to install 100 raingardens in the central neighborhoods of south Minneapolis, and work continues as the residents learn about maintaining, measuring outcomes, and maximizing the effectiveness of the existing raingardens. There was even a short documentary film, “A Neighborhood of Raingardens,” made about the project! Read more on their collaborative work on their website.

Another favorite past winner is Minnesota Green Communities. Living in a multi-unit dwelling myself, I was thrilled to hear about this project designed to create more energy-efficient multi-unit housing throughout Minnesota.

What are some of your favorite projects that have been past winners or finalists of the Environmental Initiative Awards?

Nominate your project now – time is running out! The nominations period ends Friday, March 2 at 5:00 p.m.
